For awhile, it has been popping up on a state by state basis. But on July 1st, the US Congress became involved in the matter.

A bill introduced in Congress yesterday would require Internet retailers to collect sales tax regardless of whether they have a physical presence in a customer’s state.

Unlike similar bills that have come up, this one has strong support. The National Retail Federation, a retail industry trade group, says the Main Street Fairness Act would help to create a level playing field regarding sales tax collection among all types of retailers, including large retail chains as well as web-only retailers. It adds that it prefers national legislation over several existing state laws that have cropped up in New York, Colorado and other states that take a narrower approach to enforcing sales tax collection.

It should be noted again that all of retail clients that SpinSix manages who have an affiliate program do collect sales tax currently, or are lead generation affiliate programs, where the tax is not applicable.

Having just started to research companies like Vocus, whose software suite will allow a company or an agency to monitor a companies engagement, I find the article interesting, though I do not entirely agree with the opinion of Professor Sharp. I do understand that data can be manipulated, and there is always the human factor when working with numbers, but metrics should always be used as a baseline for any marketing decision that is made.
