New York Launches Investigation into Post-Transaction Marketers

The Office of Andrew Cuomo, the New York Attorney General, announced Wednesday that he was opening up an investigation into the marketing practices of several well known online retailers, such as Staples, Orbitz and 1-800 Flowers to learn about their relationship with the post-transaction marketing companies Webloyalty, Affinion, and Vertrue.
The way these companies operate is by presenting pop-up ads to a customer once they finish completing a transaction. Most of the time, the offer is displayed in away to make it look like the discount is coming directly from the retailer. The pop-up ad will offer anything from free …
